What are Biostimulators?

Biostimulators are the latest injectable treatments in the field of aesthetic medicine. These are biosynthetic compounds which are injected in the deeper layers of the skin, triggering the body’s natural process of collagen production and tissue growth. In comparison, dermal fillers are injected to replace volume loss while biostimulators slow down the skin ageing and maintain natural volume.

Benefits of Biostimulators

The main action of Biostimulators is to keep the skin younger by stimulating the skin to produce collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. The ageing process involves degradation of these natural protein compounds in the skin resulting to loss of laxity and wrinkles.

The indications for Biostimulator injections include:

  • Reversal of collagen loss resulting in loss of skin elasticity and laxity.
  • Improvement of skin laxity and firmness.
  • Anti-ageing.
  • Re-hydration of mature skin.
  • Improvement of skin quality.

Types of Biostimulators

Biostimulators are derived from different compounds. Here are a selection of FDA-approved biostimulators available at SKIN111:

1. Radiesse

Radiesse is the only FDA-approved Calcium Hydroxyapatite injection. It is the best choice of product for skin tissue remodeling and scaffolding. It has very little hydration effects, however it provides sustained and long-lasting stimulation of collagen and elastin production. It is a flexible compound that can be injected in the face and also body areas.

2. Sculptra

Sculptra is made of PLLA (poly-l-lactic acid) which has been approved by FDA since 2004. PLLA is a collagen stimulator which absorbs into your body a few days after treatment to encourage your cells to produce more collagen to tighten and lift the skin. It is indicated for the correction of lipoatrophy or the thinning of facial fat pads. It is injected to augment the framework of the face and naturally restore facial fats. Sculptra is recommended for matured and younger clients with sunken face or volume loss.

3. Nithya

Nithya is the first injectable collagen derived from equine achilles tendon. Equine tendon is an FDA-approved source of collagen compound used to restore skin damage and injuries. Nithya has collagen type 1 that triggers the body to produce collagen type 3. These collagens are essential in skin tissue regeneration and repair.

What conditions can Bio Stimulators treat?

Bio stimulators are effective in treating:

  • Facial wrinkles and folds.
  • Volume loss in the cheeks and temples
  • Skin laxity and sagging
  • Acne scars
  • Jawline definition

Who is a good candidate for Bio Stimulators?

Initial signs of skin ageing are noticed starting from around age 25 to late 20’s. Injection of biostimulators can be started at around this age, especially if there is accelerated ageing, collagen loss and volume loss. It can also be used as a combination treatment for scar revision and skin remodeling.

Aftercare

The administration of biostimulators may vary depending on the individual Doctors’ technique or product protocol. Generally, biostimulators are injected into the dermal layer of the skin. Part of the treatment, there will be swelling, redness and possibility of bruising in the injection points. In most cases, downtime ranges from 6 to 48 hours. Detailed home instruction will be advised accordingly.
